God Has a Plan: Mark 11:01-06
We can live confidently knowing that we rest secure within His plan. God may not force every detail of our life to happen exactly as it does, but He knows who you are at the core of your being. He knows the decisions you need to make to bring fulfillment to your soul. He knows who you are and what will truly feed you. He has a plan.
It’s finally come. After Jericho, the next logical step is Jerusalem. In preparation for the triumphal entry, Jesus sends a couple of disciples ahead to get a colt. He tells the disciples where to find it and how to handle the situation that will arise when they take the colt.
Jesus knows the score. It’s not about being able to predict the future as much as it displays confidence in God’s overall plan. Three times Jesus has taught His disciples about His death and resurrection; three times they have failed to understand what is going to happen and how imminent His death is. When Jesus tells them about the colt, He is attempting to clue them in once more this is a part of a plan. God is in control. As bad as things are about to get over the next seven days, He’s got this.
Humans are notoriously bad at looking into the future. Yes, we can take our past experiences and know that when we follow certain patterns of behavior, we can expect certain consequences. This is what makes older people wise and younger people need mentoring. It’s who we are. We are horrible at anticipating future events the first time we encounter them. We are easily blindsided. That is why Jesus continues to give the disciples snippets of what is to come. He wants them to be prepared as much as possible, knowing that the future is our Achilles’ heel.
To this end, Jesus sends out a pair of disciples to retrieve the colt. Doing something new is more difficult than doing something where you know what to expect. When doing something new, we often do it better with a partner. A partner gives us someone to whom we can talk, off whom we bounce ideas, to help us process what’s happening. God gives us spiritual community for a reason. God made families based on a husband and wife. Discipleship is done in community. Mentoring is often done in pairs or small groups. Jesus knows this when He sends out the pair of disciples to get the colt.
God has a plan. He has a plan for Jesus to save humankind. Within the grand plan, the disciples have a part to play. That means God has a plan for each of the disciples, too. He has plans within plans within plans. We can live confidently knowing that we rest secure within His plan.
