No Brainer: Mark 2:1-2
If you had enough time to do anything you want, what would you do? Being a person who loves working with wood, I’d love to spend some time with some walnut or cherry and make something beautiful. Being a person who loves mentoring, I’d love to sit down with someone with whom I have a connection and listen to them. Being a person who enjoys teaching, I’d love to think through some new teaching strategies and make some plans to see if I can employ a new strategy to help people learn. Then again, I’d also love to lay with my wife and dogs in the yard and watch the clouds go by. Of course, It’s going to be cold outside today, so maybe that one will have to wait – or move to the heated living room.
Having spent some time out in the wilderness because His popularity grew to the point of not being able to function, Jesus returns home to Capernaum. The problem that drove Jesus away from Capernaum hasn’t been resolved, though. The crowds hear that Jesus is back and they come out to see Him. So many people gather that they can’t even find room at His door.
Jesus knows something, though. The world is always going to be full of problems. You can’t walk outside your house without having to deal with something. There is always a decision to be made. There is always a conversation to be had. Jesus isn’t going to let something like a full house stop Him. His house His full, so Jesus brings out the Word. Jesus teaches.
Jesus seizes the opportunity. A crowd gathered, probably people waiting to see something fabulous so they can claim they were there, and the rumor mill can wind up all over. Jesus doesn’t really care why they are there. Jesus preaches to them. Jesus talks about God’s Word. Jesus speaks about the Law, the Prophets, and anything else that He can use to help these people find relationship with God.
Jesus had the time. The people had the time. It seems like the time was right to talk about God.
Doesn’t it sound so simple when put in those terms? He had the time, so He talked about God. The Bible reads like this decision is a no brainer. What else would Jesus do?
Naturally, that makes me think. I frequently have the time, but how often am I looking for opportunities to bring people into connection with God? If I had the time to do anything I want, what would I do?
